Bernie Masterson studied at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD), achieving a first-class MFA Honours. She has extensive experience providing educational services in prisons in Ireland as both teacher and artist. She is also the recipient of the inaugural Janet Mullarney Prize 2020 for her video work Flight. Her work 'Bold Writing' was selected for the annual MExIndex Screening 2020. Her work is interdisciplinary in nature, sometimes collaborative, and often deals with challenging subject matter regarding our responsibilities as individuals, as communities, and universally. She seeks to find alternative points of view in order to critically analyse and create new conversations around humanity’s shared responsibilities. Key components of her practice include painting, drawing, research, film, editing, and sound design. Recent awards include an Arts Council Agility Award Round One June (2021) and the Janet Mullarney 1st Prize in June 2020 for her short film 'Flight', selected by Seån Kissane, Joy Gerrard and Jerome O Drisceoil in association with the Highlanes Gallery, and an art residency with Mart supported by the Arts Council in 2021.
